What is this??

I must admit. I don't Luge. I race motorcycles. But I picked this gravity luge tube thing and know nothing about it. I believe it's from the 70's. Anyone seen anything like this? You lay face down and head first and has bicycle forks with grab handles to steer the front wheel. It also has a brake lever on it. You are held in by a harnes, so if you crash you stay with the rig.

Hi ,
I believe that´s a Skatecar .
A piece of museum you have there .
You can look for information about it in www.ncdsa.com (disciplines).

yessir, looks like a skate car to me. dig around on the internet a little, and you can find recorded television broadcasts of skatecar races from the 70's!

Hello everyone, my friend Matthias sent me an email about this posting. If sure looks like a skatecar. However, on skatecars that were raced in the 1970s, only lean controlled steering was allowed. Some of the other rules included:
Maximum length - 10'
Maximum weight - 75lbs
Maximum axle width 12"
Brake and parachute required
Maximum wheel diameter - 4"

Are the wheels and trucks still intact?

I raced as Signal Hill and Akron in 1978 in the Vetter Streamliner skatecar. Below are links to some pics and a video.

I read the rules you mentioned. i.e, maximum of a 4" wheel. It's missing all the wheels but it looks like it has a traditional bicycle fork at front which lead me to believe it took a larger wheel than a 4" wheel.. Looked inside it more and the harnesses has hand written in marker "inst. 77" (installed 1977?) which might establish the actual date of build. The tail section with the hole that you can see in the picture could have housed a chute. The guy I bought it from is a friend of mine who got it from his neighbor years ago from whom supposedly won a race in a Bumbershoot event. (Seattle thing). Unfortunately the original owner is not alive anymore.

Thanks for the all the interest in figuring out this thing. It may be a nice peice of history. I'm enamored with it now!

Just watched the video... I wanna build on of those! Every year we have an adult soap box derby held on Mt. Tabor in Portland, Or. Streetluge is specifically banned, but I think one of those might be able to squeak by the rules.

If I had any money at all I would totally be up for buying it. Where abouts are you located? I might have to do a quick sale on some hobby stuff to raise some funds.

The pictures are of the top side. I will try post the bottom pics. Yes You fit inside and enter through the bottom with three harnesses holding you in. It is a tight fit. As far as the price couple hundred? let me know what you think is fair.
